Kicking off the Smart City Strategy Journey for the City of Luenen

Muelheim / Ruhr, May 2023.
On May 4, 2023, the kick-off event for the creation of a Smart City strategy for the City of Luenen took place. Around 80 participants from local and regional government, business, science, and civil society joined together to learn more about the strategy process, to create a joint vision for the Smart City of Lünen and discuss focus topics for the strategy. The overall strategy process is coordinated and executed by our smart city consulting team at bee smart city.

Kicking off THE Smart City Luenen STRATEGY PROCESS

The aim of the "Smart City Strategy" is to improve the quality of life for citizens by taking advantage of the opportunities offered by digitization and new technologies, and to make Luenen an even more attractive place to live and do business for everyone.

There is still a lot to be done before this can happen. The kick-off event marked the start of an eventful journey on the way to making Luenen "smart". Our colleagues from bee smart city and the Smart City Manager of the City of Luenen, Gregor Spanke, formulated the goals and potentials for a sustainable and innovative city, along with all participants in several workshop groups.

These ongoing workshops will highlight the possibilities of a Smart City. Some examples, such as intelligent control and integration of sustainable mobility solutions or smart irrigation systems for green spaces, showcase the unlimited opportunities of a Smart City, with sustainability and resilience as its primary goals. In addition, suggestions were made regarding digitally supported information and participation offerings that can be created for citizens to jointly shape the Smart City of Luenen in a demand-oriented and need-based manner.

Thomas Mueller at kick-off City of Luenen

"Smart City is not just a phrase, but an approach that supports integrated urban development to make a city more attractive in all areas of services, simplifying the everyday life of citizens," states Thomas Müller, Managing Partner of bee smart city GmbH.

"However, every city has its unique challenges and potentials, and that is what we will establish in the coming months. The kick-off was the first important step. The next step will be to jointly define focal fields of action, establish clear goals, and develop implementation measures to achieve these goals. In the end, we will have a Smart City concept that is individually tailored to the City of Luenen", explains Thomas Müller.

The process for the Smart City concept of the City of Luenen is designed to be participatory, which means that in addition to the actors from administration, politics, business and civil society, the citizens of the City of Luenen can also get actively involved. On May 12, the Mitmach.RAUM was opened as part of the city's Smart City activities, a designated place in the heart of Luenen, for a dialogue exchange with citizens. The Mitmach.RAUM will also be the venue for further workshops on the development of the Smart City strategy.
