Muelheim / Ruhr , May 2023. bee smart city began it's journey guiding the city of Luenen on its way to becoming a Smart City. On May 4, 2023, the kick-off event took place in Luenen. Around 80 participants from City Hall, business, administration, and society took part in the event, where participants joined together to create a mission statement for the Smart City of Lünen.
Kick-off Launched for Smart City LuenenThe aim of the "Smart City Strategy" is to improve the quality of life for citizens by taking advantage of the opportunities offered by digitization and new technologies, and to make Luenen an even more attractive place to live and do business for everyone.
There is still a lot to be done before this can happen. The kick-off event marked the start of an eventful journey on the way to making Luenen "smart". Our colleagues from bee smart city and the Smart City Manager of the city of Luenen, Gregor Spanke, formulated the goals and potentials for a sustainable and innovative city, along with all participants in several workshop groups.
These ongoing workshops will highlight the possibilities of a Smart City. Some examples, such as an intelligent control and integration of sustainable mobility solutions, or green spaces irrigation systems, showcase the unlimited opportunities of a Smart City, with sustainability as its primary goal. In addition, suggestions were made regarding digitally supported information and participation offerings that can be created for citizens in order to jointly shape Smart City Luenen in a demand-oriented manner.
"Smart City is not just a phrase, but an approach that supports integrated urban development to make a city more attractive in all areas of services, simplifying the everyday life of citizens," sums up Thomas Müller, Managing Director of bee smart city GmbH. "However, every city has its individual challenges and potentials, and that is what we will establish in the coming months. The kick-off was the first important step. The next step will be to jointly define the goals and points for action, establish goals, and develop implementation measures to achieve these goals. In the end, we will have a Smart City concept that is individually tailored to the city of Luenen."
The process for the Smart City concept of the city of Luenen is designed to be participatory, which means that in addition to the actors from administration, politics, business and civil society, the citizens of the city of Luenen can also get involved. On May 12, the Mitmach.RAUM was opened as part of the city's Smart City activities, a designated place in the heart of Luenen, for a dialog exchange with citizens. The Mitmach.RAUM will also be the venue for further workshops on the development of the Smart City strategy.
